Pomegranates Mediterranean Closes… and Opens

Have you ever been down to Pomegranates Mediterranean, the wee grocery near the Southtowne Shoppes at 28th & Oak? If you haven’t, you’d better hurry – the grocery will be closing down around the end of August. That’s not the last hurrah for Pomegranates, however. The business will be kept going as a venture involving catering, personal/home chefing, and cooking classes. In a newsletter to Pomegranates customers, the owners write:

It has been almost two years since we opened our doors to Eugene’s Foodies and we have appreciated your business and support. Just about a year and a half ago, I started providing In-Home Persian Cooking Classes, as a result of the success of these classes I have found my calling; cooking for others! It is with great agony that we came to the decision to close down our store. We hope to close our doors by the end of August but we will be here until the last of our products and fixtures are gone

The new Pomegranates Mediterranean will be offering the following (taken from their newsletter):

  • Personal Cheffing – I will create a menu based on your needs and likes/dis-likes. After setting a date, I will do the shopping and arrive at your home to prepare the desired amount of meals (5 meals of 4 servings each, 5 meals of 2 servings each,or one of my other options). At the end of the day you will have three days worth of fresh, healthy, homemade meals placed in the fridge and the rest placed in the freezer with re- heating instructions and if requested a basic caloric breakdown.
  • In-Home Culinary Classes – You arrange your friends, family, co-workers, or whoever you want and the kitchen; I will arrive with all my equipment and the food and teach you the wonderful, exciting flavors of the Mediterranean and Eastern Mediterranean.
  • Catering – I will create a menu and arrive at your home or other kitchen and prepare all the food for your event. These are smaller events (up to 25 guests) which tend to be more casual.
  • My Traveling Pantry – For the popular Italian and Moroccan ingredients that only we had, I will take orders throughout the week and deliver them on Mondays to your work or home. There will be a list provided on our website what will be offered. This is just a small way of staying in touch with some of our regular customers

  1. This was a very interesting blog entry. I’ve always wondered about the Pomegranates Market was all about and now it’s too late. I am glad to hear the folks are going to carry on as a home cooking school thing because they seem passionate about the food.
    Thanks for the info.

  2. I just “discovered” Pomegranites a couple of weeks ago. When I was there, the owner gave me the brochure for her in-home cooking classes, and I’ve talked to a couple friends and we are totally down with it! It sounds like a really fun experience and the cost is pretty reasonable.
