Biking in the fog & the humble bandanna

Biking in fog
Rain? No worries. Cold? Please. But fog? I hate fog.

Biking in it, anyway. Sitting in my reading chair, book in one hand and a cuppa coffee in the other, while glancing at the pea soup outside? That’s awesome. Sucking in cloud for 20 minutes during my pre-dawn commute? Ugh.

Humble bandanna to the rescue
There is one thing that makes it easier, though (well, other than the wet-weather gear). It’s so simple, but it makes all the difference:

A bandanna.

Wrap a bandanna around your nose and mouth, and in addition to looking like the REI version of a cowboy, you block out the damp chill of the fog, and instead breathe in drier, warmer air.

So bring it, fog. I’ve got my bandanna. That’s right. Yeah.

Know

It was one thing to know what was going to happen next, and another to watch it, unfold and blast out, and do as nothing against it as an umbrella against a hurricane. They walked towards one another. They said the words. The wind hailed down and there was no sun. But it was happening, the sky darkening and the air feeling damper and damper and then there was a howl and –

Pancakes (from scratch) Saturday

  1. French Press-up some Cafeto "Glenwood Blend" coffee
  2. Bust out some frozen raspberries and blueberries
  3. Try your hand at any of these recipes (with maybe a couple of scrambled eggs on the side as well)

Finish with an adult geek’s version of Saturday morning cartoons, and munch away while watching the last six episodes of Cowboy Bebop.

Exquisite.

Night with some small dreams

Quiet evening at home. Finding Neverland, and some steak and Pinot Noir with Jodie. I’m thinking of the simple imagination and joy of Peter Pan, so well embodied in the movie Finding Neverland.

It has me remembering many dreams. There have been many years where I didn’t think those dreams would be around anymore, but the past few years have, in a sense, been reminding me of my old strength, my greatest strength — my imagination.

What’s stopping you achieving your writing goals?

For me, this is an easy answer: inertia. And more than a bit of trepidation. And a tendency to blow a project up in my head, getting so caught up in large-scale, that I don’t break down the big into all the littles that it will take to build up.
