Congratulations Paige Sechler, winner of the Powell’s Decade of Reading Essay Contest.
Paige’s essay – Never Shall I Forget
Each year, I teach an inter-disciplinary unit focusing on the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel’s Night is the centerpiece of the unit. From a literary standpoint, Wiesel’s words possess power; as a survivor, the story he tells carries a greater weight for these kids. Real life. True stories. These are what they want to hear.

Thanks for the congratulatory nod! Sorry I didn’t run across this post sooner, but it was much appreciated!
No worries, and my pleasure. Rack up anymore awards since then? Hard to believe it’s been, what, 9 months or so since then?
It HAS been a while! And, believe it or not, I am STILL spending my $1000 in books. I used quite a bit on books for my classroom, and quite a bit on friends and family, but, the last of it is going to be used on me. (My copy of the latest Harry Potter just shipped today!)
And, alas, no more awards for me. Winning that contest was my biggest thrill in a long time.
Nah, I can see that. Especially given the sweet second-hand collection Powell’s has, burning through $1G could take some time.
But hey – at least you won that one! Talk about a cool win too – prestigious store, and a fat prize like that? Not too shabby
