Oct. 14 Eugene Smart-ups Pub Talk for Eugene Start-ups

Wouldn't it be great if you not only had a great idea for a business, but you also had a group of like-minded folks (and even potential investors) you could present your idea to?

Now you can. Smart-ups is a new entrepreneurial support group for start-ups in the Willamette Valley. A local chapter of Portland-based Oregon Entrepreneurs Network (OEN) and co-founded by Caroline Cummings (also CEO and co-founder of OsoEco), Smart-ups hosts regular pub talks where local entrepreneurs get 12 minutes to pitch their business plan to an audience of peers and investors.

Beer & Biz Plan

Would you like to present your business plan to your peers and to potential investors? Pub Talks will be held throughout the year in the Willamette Valley. The next Smart-ups pub talk will be held The Oregon Electric Station from 5:30 - 7:30pm on Tues., Oct. 14. Presenting businesses have already been selected, but you are welcome to attend and get an idea of how the Pub Talks format works.

Slow Food Arabian Nights Dinner - Sunday, Sep. 28

Forget fast food. You want good eating – so you want slow food. And when it comes to slow food, it doesn't get better than what we can grow right here in Oregon. Slow Foods Eugene promotes good eating of quality food, especially food produced close to home, and on Sunday, Sept. 28, you can feast on some of the best slow food available.

Slow Foods Eugene is holding a fundraising dinner at Adam's Place in downtown Eugene, to support the School Garden Project and to send a local farmer and local chef to Slow Food's Tierre Madre event, held in Italy as a conference for slow food promotion worldwide. The price is $100 per person, which includes 7-course meal, wine, and gratuity. Of the $100 ticket, $60 is a charitable donation to Slow Food Eugene.

If good food at one of Eugene's best restaurants isn't enough for you, the Slow Foods newsletter (PDF) notes:

Executive Chef Adam Bernstein welcomes us to a wonderful evening of great food and entertainment. He promises belly dancers and, perhaps, another surprise, insurance carrier permitting.

How's that for an enticing evening?

Elliot Martínez's Boozeweek Zine

Fascinating article about a new 'zine in town. Boozeweek profiles the best of liquor and cocktails in Eugene. That's right, the best. The word "gourmet" would not be lost here. Also intriguing is the way Boozeweek publisher Elliot Martínez has opted for the 'zine format. Print. Not online. And has been gaining quite a following:

New Road Safety Programs Rolls Out

From Portland to Eugene, there's a new road safety program, whose intent is to help pedestrians, vehicle drivers and cyclists share the road better and more courteously. Here's to seeing what happens. As for me, I'll be happy if at the least more cyclists start using lights at night and stop riding the wrong way down streets...
