Grand Opening for New Cornucopia Tonight

Cornucopia's new location, in the space formerly occupied by Chantrelle's at 5th & Pearl, is having their grand opening tonight. The lads from Oakshire Brewing will also be there, pouring beers including their new ESB, brewed not with their house yeast, but with English yeast.

The wise Samuel Rutledge has made a great point about this: "I'll bet [Oakshire's] ESB and their Espresso Stout would make a killer black and tan".

I'll bet he's right, and we plan on finding out this evening.

Oakshire Brewery: Tale of a Visit, New Blog & New Brewer

Jeff and Chris Althouse at Eugene's Oakshire Brewery got a wee visit and write-up (the Ella mentioned below, by the way, is not the same Ella as my dog): Rooftop Brew - Blog Archive - Visiting Oakshire Brewery.

Ella and I were down in Eugene last Friday and were lucky enough to get a private tour of Oakshire Brewery from the head brewer, uncle Joe

You can also check out Oakshire's new blog, launched recently. That'll also be a good way for you to start getting to know Matt Van Wyk, Oakshire's new brewer. He's moving to Eugene from Chicago (by way of a trip to Belgium) and will begin heating up the kettles in April.

Oakshire Brewing Holiday Ale, Ill-Tempered Gnome, Coming Soon to a Tap Near You

Ill Tempered Gnome, the new holiday ale from Oakshire Brewing, is being released this weekend. From Eugene to Portland, look for it on draft soon at your favorite watering hole, along with other Oakshire brews including Oakshire Watershed IPA, Oakshire Amber, Oakshire Wheat and the stellar Overcast Espresso Stout (one of my favorite beers to get when out on the town).

In Eugene, you'll find Oakshire beers all over town. Here are a few new places who have added Oakshire beers to their line-up:

  • Pegasus Pizza now serving Oakshire Amber
  • David Minor Theater now serving Oakshire Wheat (and I can personally vouch that both the theater and the beer are awesome)
  • Luckey's now serving Oakshire Wheat
  • Max's Tavern adding Ill Tempered Gnome, should be on tap around Dec. 17 (ish)

Why Homebrew is Better - Boing Boing

Jodie and I are proud homebrewers, and like the author below, part of why I like it is very simple – Homebrew is better because each time it's different. Not only is it different, but you have far more liberty to try different styles. In addition to drinking, homebrew makes great (and great-tasting) gifts. In fact, I think I need to crack open a homebrew right now...

The Brew Site: Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence

The Brew Site: Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence.
I can truly say I didn't expect them to produce a bottle of Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence—the 10th Anniversary 2007 limited edition stout brewed by Brewery Ommegang out of New York. They found it at The Bier Stein in Eugene and, well, a find like that you can't pass up.

Celtic Samurai

Calling Jeffrey Morgenthaler! Was chatting with a friend of mine recently, and he and I came up with an interesting cocktail concept, that he dubbed the "Celtic Samurai":

Celtic Samurai

  • 2 measures of scotch
  • 4 measures of warm green tea
  • 1 Tbsp. simple syrup
  • 4-5 mint leaves, muddled

Now to suss out how the actual mixing, and to see about having one of these...

Bridgeport Releases Raven Mad Imperial Porter

A gray overcast sky, the brights yellows and reds of trees – and black, black porter. Fall is truly upon the Northwest, and I do believe I'll be searching out some Raven Mad Imperial Porter, the latest release from Portland's Bridgeport:

Link: Beer Northwest: Bridgeport releases RAVEN MAD.

"BridgePort Brewing Company, Oregon's oldest craft brewery, is unveiling its next limited-edition 22-ounce Big Brew, Raven Mad. At 7.3-percent ABV, this Imperial Porter is a deliciously dark porter brewed with naughty intentions. Aged in bourbon and pinot noir barrels, this brew conjures a unique blend of roasted malts, hints of vanilla and subtle oak flavors. Stronger and bolder than typical craft brewed Porters, Raven Mad is the perfect brew for those with an adventurous spirit"

New Pub Coming to 19th & Jefferson

There's no such thing as too many good pubs, after all:

Link: Brothers’ pub plans build on past success: The Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore..

The brothers already jointly run McCallum’s Custom Catering, along with Mac’s at the Vets Club — a restaurant and nightclub at the Veterans Memorial Building in Eugene. Now they’re launching a neighborhood pub, and there’s some history there, too. Billy Mac’s Bar & Grill, which is scheduled to open June 10 next-door to the Little Y Market at 19th Avenue and Jefferson Street
