Bring on the hearty food

Yesterday our first hard rain of the season fell, and the pellet and wood stoves were both cranking heat. This weekend will be full of rain and cool air — and for us, that means it's time to get out the recipes for hearty food. Stews, soups, breads, pastas with thick sauces — accompanied by red wine or dark beer, of course.

Ready for some stick-to-your-ribs cold-weather food? Here are some tips:

  • Hit the library. From the local paper, which usually has a weekly food section, to cooking magazines galore, the library is a great resource to find recipes you want to make this winter. Find what makes you drool, and try not to short-circuit the photocopier.
  • Go through your home collection. As one season starts to close, I sit down one evening and sift through our cookbooks and loose recipes. I make notes of things I want to make for the coming season, from old favorites to new and untried dishes. Then I clip them all together, notes and recipes, to sift through when planning meals.
  • Check supplies. Making a lot of chili this winter? Check the cumin, chili powder, paprika and cayenne supplies. If possible, buy spices in bulk so you always have needed seasonings on-hand. Don't get too much though; 6 months is a pretty good rule of thumb for herb/spice shelf life.
  • Include a dinner party or two in your plans. For us in the Pacific Northwest, a lot of the joy of winter is relaxing at home, warm and snug. Jodie and I love the solitude of our home, but we love our friends too, so we try to make sure to have people over regularly for a home-cooked meal. (Well, that, and I love cooking for friends.) Good company and camaraderie are a great antidote to gloomy weather.

I love fall and winter here. The leaves change; the air gets crisp. But we also have mild winters here, and I like that we have rain instead of snow, and gray skies instead of air that could freeze-dry your lungs. Most of all, I love cooking big stews, soups and what-not, and can't wait to bust out the first of many hearty meals.

Growing swiss chard in winter

Jodie recently planted a bunch of winter crops. Our arugula, which we'd let go to seed, also proliferated over a great deal of the garden. And swiss chard may be another crop for us to consider: In My Kitchen Garden.

Variety is good for the garden and the tastebuds, but if I were allowed to grow only one leafy green, it would definitely be Swiss chard. This nutrient-packed chameleon of the vegetable world comes in a variety of colors and is a superb, year-round stand-in for lettuce, spinach and celery. When the spinach is suffering from heatstroke, or the lettuce is keeling over from frostbite, my hardy Swiss chard doesn't even flinch.

Pay only for what you use with NearlyFreeSpeech.NET Web Hosting

For starters, if you aren't using RetailMeNot to help you find coupons and savings when shopping online, you should. That said, go all the way to the bottom of their site, and you'll find a link to their host — NearlyFreeSpeech.NET Web Hosting. I mention this because Nearly Free Speech has an interesting hosting model. Instead of paying X per month for Y amount of bandwidth, you pay only for what you use. I'm diving into them some more, but I'm digging what I see so far.

Any customers of Nearly Free Speech out there? Please leave a comment with your experiences and opinions.

Department of Revenue: Personal Income Tax Kicker Information

Stay with me — Oregon income tax payers are actually going to get some money back. There are lots of reasons behind the refund, or kicker, which are far beyond my wee brain, but the main thing is taxpayers will be getting some dosh come, say, November or December. Get more info, and an estimate of what you can expect your kicker amount to be, here:

Free HTML editors for Windows, Mac & Linux

Good breakdown of free HTML editors. Offhand, I take issue with the inclusion of Nvu; I've checked it out before, and was very underwhelmed, but it may have improved since then.

A Trader Joe's should take over the old River Road Safeway location

How about a Trader Joe's in River Road/Santa Clara?
With the closing of the River Road-area Safeway, I have a recommendation for the 24,000 sq.ft. empty space: fill it with a Trader Joe's. Here's why:

  • Fill up your wine rack (with good wine) for $30 (we did). Great food, great booze, great prices (I'm not being paid or sponsored in any way by Trader Joe's to write this, by the way)
  • Location, location, location. The old Safeway location is right on River Road, just off Beltline — 2 major arterials. Great place for people to stop off for some groceries or a quick grab at tonight's dinner or a bottle to take to a shindig.
  • Yes, there's a Trader Joe's at Oakway... but do people in the River Road/Santa Clara area shop there? People in Eugene are afflicted with what I call psychological distance. The Oakway Center? That's, like, on Coburg Road. Across the river. Too far. Just the thought of it makes me want to have a lie-down. We like things, if not close, to at least feel close. And a Trader Joe's at River Road and Beltline would feel close, and be close, to all our hungry tummies and healthy wallets in this area. There might be a Trader Joe's at Oakway, but I have a hunch that it's not tapping the RR/SC market. A location here would open up new Eugene-area marketshare to Trader Joe's.
  • Speaking of wallets. I'm guessing — I don't know, but I'm guessing — that the average Trader Joe's shopper tends to be a tad upscale. Or, if not upscale, they like good food, from a cool company, and they're going to support that business. The River Road/Santa Clara area has a wide range of families, from the younger and not yet with child (such as me and Jodie), to the upper-middle class, to the empty nester who likes a well-laden table. We'd like to shop at a place like Trader Joe's. It fits in with us.

Do you think a Trader Joe's should come to RR/SC?
Those are just a few reasons why I think Trader Joe's should move to the old River Road Safeway location. On a personal level, I love Trader Joe's, from its food to its overall ethos. I'd shop at one closer to my own home. So would many others in this area.

The Trader Joes website has an area where you can recommend future locations. I'm going to submit this piece there, right after I post this. Do you think a Trader Joe's in River Road/Santa Clara is a good idea? Leave your comments here, or tell Trader Joe's.
