Stock pantry with intense flavor in mind

It's always good to have some good grub on hand, that takes no time at all to turn into a tasty meal. Here are some good items to consider for your pantry:

Deadline cooking is all about the ingredients. Select the right high-flavor, low-prep ingredients and great meals practically assemble themselves.

New East Bank/North Bank bike path

The stretch of bike path between VRC and Alton Baker Park was closed for quite a while. Crews ripped up the old, worn-out asphalt, and laid a new surface of concrete. Today after work, with errands to run in town and around campus, I glided out of the office to the smooth, light-gray concrete. And friends, it was a nice ride. I had to make myself forget all the little jumps and swerves I was accustomed too. No more bumps to dodge, no more near-potholes to swerve around. I all but glided to the Ferry Street Bridge.

Nice job, Eugene.

3 main ingredients

Want to make a meal especially tasty? It's easy — just add one or more of the following *

  • Cheese
  • Bacon
  • Camping

* With the following exceptions of dessert and beverages. However, bacon-wrapped dark chocolate might be a good idea, especially under the stars and marinating in campfire smoke...

Inadvertent blogging break

This past weekend, Jodie and I were out of town. I forgot to schedule some posts. My bad. Regular ol' stuff resumes tomorrow.

The 2007 Annual Eugene Blackberry Report

Sometimes, there is just no way to preface bad news, so here is the slap in the face, the ice down the back...

Yet again, for the second year in a row, there are no blackberries in Eugene.

I know, I know what you are feeling, what you are thinking. I know the despair, the torment, the desire to rush from your homes and offices and coffeehouses and check for yourselves. But it is in vain. Do some vacuuming instead. Get some work done. Order another latte, or perhaps a cremosa, with berry syrup, because that's as close as you will get this year to having blackberries in Eugene.

I have already been in contact with the proper authorities. The BSB, Berry Shenanigans Bureau, is currently flying, at supersonic speed, a team of crack berry non-growth investigators to our fair Willamette Valley. Every needed taxpayer dollar shall be spent, invested and trodden as they seek to uncover the truth behind the barren canes. The president suspects Al Queda. The vice president suspects hippie subversives. And vice versa.

Whoever is at fault -- global warming, subprime mortgage lenders, meth addicts, Big Berry -- we may never know. But all I know is that there are no blackberries in Eugene, and there will only be weeping and gnashing, of teeth yearning to be turned purple.

With great sadness at delivering, for the second time, such sad and terrible news, I sign off and retire to my beer cellar.

Blueprint for a Brilliant Blog Launch

Great reminder that blogging, like anything else you build or set out to accomplish, is not all huzzah and glory. There are things to keep in mind, things to expect - and this article will give you a good grasp of those:

Launching a brand new blog can be extremely exciting. But it can also be awfully lonely for up to a year as you build readership, unless you plan to begin with a bang

Retirement and college planning overview

Trying to wrap your head around all those numbers 3-letter financial acronyms? IRA, 529, UTMA — ugh. Getting Finances Done has a plain-language breakdown of what each is, and which you do, and do not, want to pursue. There's something to learn here for everyone; I feel pretty good about my grasp of IRAs and 401k, but the info on college investing — using an ESA, or Education Savings Account, instead of a 529 — was new to me:
